Russia and Myanmar Resume Direct Air Connectivity After a 30-Year Hiatus

Russia and Myanmar have reinstated air travel between the two nations following a 30-year hiatus, as reported by TASS, citing information from the Rosaviation press service.

Myanmar now joins the list as the 38th country with which Russia maintains direct air connectivity.

On September 5, 2023, the first regular flight of Myanmar Airways International arrived in Novosibirsk, operating on the route Yangon – Mandalay – Novosibirsk.

The welcoming committee at the Novosibirsk airport included Yuri Petukhov, the First Vice-Governor of the Novosibirsk Region, and a delegation from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, led by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Lwin U.

The parties engaged in substantive discussions concerning the planned opening of the Consulate General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Novosibirsk and explored areas of cooperation in culture, education, and tourism, as stated in the press release.

This new air route marks a significant milestone in the relations between Myanmar and Russia, opening up opportunities for enhanced cultural exchange, educational collaborations, and increased tourism between the two nations. It also reflects the growing diplomatic ties and cooperation between the countries, as demonstrated by the planned opening of the Consulate General of Myanmar in Novosibirsk. This consulate will serve as a vital hub for diplomatic, cultural, and economic exchanges, further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
