Rosewood London Reportedly Put Up for Sale

Rosewood London, the five-star hotel occupying a landmark Edwardian building on High Holborn, has reportedly been brought to market for an undisclosed sum, marking one of the most significant potential hotel transactions in the UK capital in recent years.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the sale process has been initiated by the hotel’s owners, investment firm CTF Development, which is controlled by the billionaire Cheng family. The move is understood to be part of a broader effort to release capital as the family’s wider property empire navigates financial pressure.

Bloomberg reports that New World Development Co., the flagship Hong Kong-listed property group controlled by the Cheng family, is facing liquidity challenges. Against this backdrop, high-value assets outside Asia are reportedly being evaluated for potential disposal, with Rosewood London emerging as a prime candidate due to its scale, profile, and long-term value.

The London hotel is operated by Rosewood Hotel Group, which responded to Bloomberg’s inquiry by declining to comment on ownership matters. The group emphasised, however, that its brands are not for sale and that all Rosewood properties worldwide continue to operate fully and without disruption. This clarification is likely intended to reassure staff, guests, and partners that the reported sale is strictly a real estate transaction rather than a strategic shift in the brand’s global positioning.

Opened in its current guise in October 2013, Rosewood London has become one of the capital’s most recognisable luxury hotels, known for its grand courtyard entrance, contemporary British design, and strong emphasis on food and beverage. The Cheng family acquired the building in 2006, long before the Rosewood name was attached to the property. At the time, it was operated as The Chancery Court Hotel, a role it had played since the late 1990s following an extensive conversion from former office use.

The decision to rebrand the hotel under the Rosewood flag marked a pivotal moment both for the building and for the brand itself. Rosewood London was one of the group’s earliest and most prominent European openings, helping to cement its reputation in the ultra-competitive London luxury market. Over the past decade, the hotel has been positioned as a bridge between heritage architecture and modern hospitality, targeting both international travellers and London-based clientele.

Today, the property comprises 264 guest rooms and 44 suites, many of which are among the largest in central London. In addition, the hotel features 11 event and meeting spaces, making it a popular venue for corporate functions, private celebrations, and high-profile social events. Its food and beverage offering is anchored by Holborn Dining Room, a destination restaurant and bar known for its British brasserie-style menu, extensive gin selection, and regular live music programming.
