Sagrada Familia to Light Up 4 Towers on 12th November

If you’re in the Catalan capital and eager to witness a remarkable spectacle, mark 12th November on your calendars. Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia basilica now stands one step closer to Antoni Gaudi’s visionary design, thanks to the recent completion of the Towers of Matthew and John. This accomplishment enhances the basilica’s majestic presence on the city’s skyline.

The addition of these towers signifies the installation of all four Evangelist towers at Sagrada Familia, each dedicated to one of the New Testament’s authors. To celebrate this momentous project milestone, all four towers will be illuminated on 12th November, treating the residents and visitors of Barcelona to a breathtaking display. The celebrations will also feature a concert and traditional casteller performances.

However, it’s important to note that the completion of the Evangelist towers does not mark the end of the basilica’s construction. The project is still very much ongoing, making Sagrada Familia a truly unique example of a World Heritage Site that continues to evolve even after its prestigious inclusion.

Construction began in 1882, with the aim of completing the basilica by 2026, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudi’s passing. This convergence of the past, present, and future makes Sagrada Familia an astonishing monument.

The festivities for the Evangelist towers’ completion will kick off on 4th November with a concert by the Barcelona Municipal Band at 11 am. The band will perform a repertoire of music that pays homage to the intricate connection between nature, faith, and art.

A week later, on 11th November at 11 am, four of the city’s traditional casteller groups will create human towers as a tribute to those adorning the basilica.

On 12th November, at 5:30 pm, Cardinal Joan Josep Omella will conduct a service to bless the towers. Following the service, Sagrada Familia will illuminate its four Evangelist towers for the very first time.

The celebrations continue on 16th November with a discussion on the topic of the Evangelists and their representation in the towers, held at Casa de l’Almoina in the Diocesan Museum. Don’t miss this extraordinary blend of culture, history, and architectural marvel.
