When it comes to embracing the history of the Dominican Republic, visit Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo is the largest city in the Caribbean region with over two million residents. This metro city also hides one of the popular historic neighborhoods in the region. It is the Zona Colonial neighborhood.

Take in the history of the area by roaming the Zona Colonial (or Ciudad Colonial). Located at the central part of the Santo Domingo, the Zona Colonial is a UNESCO heritage site where the Europeans made their first settlement of the Americas. It is a 500-year-old neighborhood filled with cobbled streets and regal residences.

This oldest colonial center has been visited by Christopher Colombus himself in the 15th century. You can relieve the moment in history by checking out the grand bronze statue of Christopher Colombus in the Central Parque.

A day is not enough to fully experience the grandeur of this historic neighborhood. There are many must-see architectures present here like the First Cathedral of America, the grand Alcazar De Colon, and the rugged tops of Ozma Fort. These buildings reflect the colonial architectural style of the early Europeans that are simply marvelous to look at.
