American Airlines Extends Suspension of Miami-to-Port-au-Prince Flights Indefinitely

American Airlines has announced that it will not resume its daily service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP). Initially suspended until February 12, the flights are now paused indefinitely due to ongoing safety concerns.

The decision comes after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a 30-day ban on U.S. airlines flying to Haiti following incidents in November when three aircraft were struck by gunfire in Haitian airspace. The United Nations has also temporarily halted its flights into Port-au-Prince, further restricting access for humanitarian aid to the country.

A spokesperson for American Airlines stated, “American has made the difficult decision to suspend daily service between Miami (MIA) and Port-au-Prince, Haiti (PAP). We are proud of our more than 50-year commitment to Haiti and will continue to monitor the situation, assessing safety, security, and customer demand, in evaluating a return of service.”

The airline plans to re-evaluate the possibility of resuming flights in late 2025, depending on improvements in safety and stability. In the meantime, customers affected by the suspension will receive full refunds.

This decision underscores the broader challenges facing air travel to Haiti, as multiple airlines, including JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, have also suspended flights to the country amid escalating violence and instability. The situation has left Haiti increasingly isolated, complicating both commercial air travel and humanitarian efforts.
