East Germany’s Legendary SVT Görlitz Train Returns to Service After €7 Million Restoration

One of East Germany’s most iconic trains has returned to the rails after spending more than two decades abandoned and deteriorating on a siding.

The historic SVT 18.16 Görlitz, once considered the flagship express train of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), has completed a major restoration programme and is now ready to carry passengers once again.

The train was officially unveiled to the public at Thale station in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, where hundreds of railway enthusiasts gathered to witness its return.

A Symbol of East German Rail Travel

Introduced during the 1960s, the SVT 18.16 Görlitz was one of the most advanced passenger trains in East Germany and became a symbol of the country’s rail network.

Designed for high-speed international services, the streamlined diesel train regularly operated routes linking major cities across Eastern Europe and was widely regarded as a showcase of GDR engineering.

After German reunification, the train gradually disappeared from regular service and eventually spent more than 20 years abandoned, exposed to the elements and vandalism.

Five Years of Restoration Work

The ambitious restoration project began in 2021 and ultimately required around five years of work to complete.

Engineers and restoration specialists encountered numerous challenges throughout the process, including extensive hidden damage to technical systems, electrical wiring and cable infrastructure.

The discovery of additional defects repeatedly delayed the project, pushing completion back by approximately two years.

In total, around €7 million was invested in bringing the nearly 60-year-old train back to operational condition.

Tourist Journeys Planned Across Germany

The restored train will now operate a programme of special tourist and heritage rail journeys.

Initial routes have already been confirmed across Central Germany and Brandenburg, giving passengers the opportunity to experience one of the most distinctive trains of the Cold War era.

Organisers are also planning international trips, including future services to Prague, reconnecting the train with destinations it once served during its operational career.

A New Chapter for a Historic Train

The return of the SVT 18.16 Görlitz marks one of Germany’s most significant railway preservation projects in recent years.

For railway enthusiasts, historians and travellers alike, the train offers a rare opportunity to experience a unique piece of European transport history while helping preserve an important symbol of East German engineering for future generations.
