Olsztyn-Mazury Airport Welcomes 1 Millionth Passenger

Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in northern Poland has welcomed its 1 millionth passenger since opening in 2016, marking a milestone for the regional hub. The passenger was Barbara Rakowska from Lidzbark Warmiński, who arrived in Szymany on a Wizz Air flight from Dortmund.

The airport said the arrival on 3 June 2026 was a symbolic moment in its history. It is the first time the airport has reached the 1 million passenger mark since it began operations in January 2016.

The milestone underlines the role the airport plays in linking the Warmia-Masuria region with European destinations. Wizz Air’s Dortmund service was the flight that carried the anniversary passenger.

Olsztyn-Mazury Airport has spent a decade building its position as a regional gateway for north-eastern Poland. The figure also offers a sign of continued demand for air travel from an area that sits some distance from the country’s larger airport network.

For regional airports, passenger milestones often carry significance beyond the headline number. They can reflect airline commitments, route development and the strength of demand from local travellers and visitors.

The airport’s first 1 million passengers were handled over a period of more than 10 years, from the start of operations in 2016 to the milestone reached in 2026. The achievement places Olsztyn-Mazury among the smaller European airports that have still managed to build a meaningful traffic base.

Regional airports in Poland have faced pressure in recent years from changing airline networks, competition from major hubs and shifting travel patterns. Reaching a passenger milestone of this size can therefore be an important indicator of stability for an airport outside the main national centres.

For travellers in the Warmia-Masuria region, the airport remains a key international access point. Routes to German cities such as Dortmund are part of the network that helps connect the area with the rest of Europe.

The airport has not announced any immediate change to its services following the milestone. But the 1 millionth passenger arrival gives it a clear marketing moment as it looks ahead to the next stage of growth.
