Yosemite Faces Heavy Crowds After Ending Timed Reservation System

Yosemite National Park is experiencing significant congestion at the start of its first summer without a timed reservation system, as visitor numbers surge and traffic delays increase across the park.

Park visitors have reported long entrance queues, overcrowded parking areas and extended wait times for shuttle services and access to major viewpoints.

Visitor Numbers Rise Sharply In Yosemite

According to early season figures, Yosemite has already recorded nearly 100,000 more visitors compared with the same period last year.

The increase comes after the National Park Service removed the timed entry reservation system previously used to manage peak-season demand.

Officials said the decision followed a broader evaluation of visitor access and operational management inside the park.

Long Waits Reported Across Popular Areas

Visitors have described conditions as chaotic, particularly during peak daytime hours.

Many travellers reported lengthy delays entering the park as traffic backed up near entrance gates.

Parking shortages have also become a major issue, with visitors often waiting extended periods to secure spaces near popular attractions.

Shuttle services and viewing areas throughout Yosemite Valley have experienced particularly heavy demand.

Park Advises Visitors To Arrive Early

To help reduce congestion, the Yosemite Conservancy is advising visitors to arrive early in the morning, travel during weekdays where possible and consider using public or bus transportation.

Park authorities are also encouraging travellers to monitor traffic conditions before arrival.

Visitors can receive real-time traffic updates by texting “ynptraffic” to 3331.

Debate Continues Over Reservation Systems

The removal of Yosemite’s reservation system has renewed debate over how major US national parks should manage rising tourism demand while protecting visitor experience and environmental conditions.

Timed entry systems introduced during recent years were designed to control overcrowding, reduce traffic congestion and improve access management during busy seasons.

With summer travel now underway, Yosemite is expected to remain one of the busiest national park destinations in the United States throughout the peak holiday period.
