German Family Died in Istanbul After Eating Street Food

A holiday in Turkey ended in tragedy for a family from Hamburg when two children, aged three and six, and their mother died, reportedly from food poisoning. The father remains in the hospital, according to The Bild.

The family was taken to the hospital in Istanbul three days after arriving, suffering from nausea and vomiting consistent with food poisoning. They were discharged soon after, but later, the mother and the youngest child were found unconscious in their hotel room. The entire family was rushed back to the hospital, where both children died, followed shortly after by their mother.

The father is still being treated at a hospital in Istanbul, and his condition is being closely monitored.

Local media reports that the family had eaten mussels and stuffed potatoes from a street vendor in Ortaköy, a popular tourist district on the Bosphorus, just hours before they fell ill.

Authorities in the Beşiktaş district confirmed that the food stall suspected of causing the incident has been closed indefinitely. Meanwhile, three people have been detained in connection with the case. Investigators are analyzing food samples and inspecting the vendor’s hygiene standards as part of the ongoing inquiry.
