Two of the most iconic mansions on the Bosphorus, Hatice Sultan and Fehime Sultan Mansions, are set to open their doors as a luxury hotel, offering a unique blend of historic elegance and modern luxury. Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board, Ahmet Bolat, announced the completion of restoration work and confirmed that the hotel’s opening is imminent.
Located in the picturesque neighborhood of Ortaköy, these grand 19th-century mansions, originally constructed during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II by the famed Balyan Family, have long stood as symbols of architectural heritage. However, their history has been marked by property disputes and neglect, leading to years of decay. In 2009, Turkish Airlines’ catering partner, DO&CO, leased the properties for 40 years, with the intention of transforming them into a boutique luxury hotel.
The project, delayed by legal battles, received a significant boost in 2022 when ownership of the mansions was transferred from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) to the Turkish Treasury. This change of ownership facilitated progress, allowing for the final stages of restoration to be completed.
The mansions, once used for various public services, have now been meticulously restored to their former glory, while incorporating modern amenities. A state-of-the-art infrastructure has been added, including an underground parking garage built below sea level, and the hotel will offer VIP guests the exclusive option of arriving by sea.
The hotel opening marks a significant milestone in Istanbul’s luxury tourism sector, and many are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of these beautifully restored mansions that stand as proud icons of the city’s rich past.
