Minor Hotels has signed NH Collection Innsbruck Grand Hotel Europa, marking the arrival of its premium NH Collection brand in Innsbruck through the restoration of one of Austria’s most historic luxury hotels.
Scheduled to reopen in 2029 following a comprehensive renovation, the landmark property will feature approximately 120 guestrooms and reinforce Minor Hotels’ growing presence in Austria’s urban hospitality market.
Historic Landmark to Begin a New Chapter
Originally opened in 1869 as Innsbruck’s first luxury hotel, Grand Hotel Europa occupies a prime location opposite the city’s central railway station. For more than 150 years, the property has welcomed royalty, political figures, artists and international travellers.
Among its distinguished guests have been Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Albert II of Monaco and members of The Rolling Stones.
The agreement has been signed with property owner Dr. Ernst Hutterer, who plans to preserve the hotel’s architectural heritage while modernising it for future generations. International real estate advisory firm Christie & Co supported the operator selection process.
Extensive Renovation Planned
The redevelopment will combine the building’s historic character with the contemporary design and service standards of the NH Collection brand. Plans include increasing the number of guestrooms, adding additional floors and creating a rooftop bar overlooking the city and the surrounding Tyrolean Alps.
The renovation will also restore the hotel’s historic Baroque Hall, which has hosted prestigious receptions, celebrations and social events since its opening in 1883. Once completed, the space will again serve as a venue for weddings, corporate functions and cultural gatherings.
Additional facilities are expected to include a restaurant and bar with independent street access, wellness facilities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and meeting and event spaces designed to serve both hotel guests and local residents.
Prime Location in Innsbruck
Located within walking distance of Innsbruck’s historic centre, the hotel offers convenient access to many of the city’s best-known attractions, including the Golden Roof, Maria-Theresien-Straße, the Imperial Hofburg, the Court Church, Stadtturm, Hofgarten and Congress Innsbruck.
Its central location also makes it an attractive option for business travellers arriving by rail, as well as leisure visitors exploring the Austrian Alps.
Strengthening Minor Hotels’ Austrian Portfolio
The signing expands Minor Hotels’ presence in Austria, where the company already operates eight hotels across Vienna, Salzburg and Graz. Innsbruck becomes the latest strategic destination in the group’s European expansion of the NH Collection brand.
Gonzalo Aguilar, Chief Executive Officer of Minor Hotels Europe & Americas, said the project reflects the company’s strategy of growing through distinctive landmark properties in key urban destinations where heritage, location and premium guest experiences create long-term value.
Property owner Dr. Ernst Hutterer said the ambition is to preserve the Grand Hotel Europa’s historic legacy while transforming it into a vibrant destination for both international visitors and the local community.
