Wizz Air To Launch Starlink Internet Across Entire Fleet From 2027

Wizz Air plans to equip its entire aircraft fleet with Starlink satellite internet starting in 2027, becoming the first European low-cost airline to introduce the technology onboard.

The airline announced that passengers flying with the budget carrier will eventually gain access to high-speed satellite connectivity powered by Elon Musk’s Starlink network, a move that could significantly change onboard connectivity expectations across the European low-cost market.

First European Budget Airline To Adopt Starlink

The rollout positions Wizz Air ahead of competitors in Europe’s low-cost segment. While several full-service airlines have already announced satellite internet projects, budget airlines have generally been more cautious because of installation and operational costs.

Competitors including Ryanair and easyJet previously estimated that introducing Starlink connectivity across fleets could cost airlines approximately $250 million annually.

Despite the investment requirements, airlines increasingly view onboard connectivity as both a customer service tool and a potential long-term revenue opportunity.

Passenger Growth Supports Expansion Plans

The connectivity announcement arrives as Wizz Air reports strong traffic growth. The carrier said passenger numbers increased by 26% in May compared with previous periods, reinforcing expectations for a stronger summer season.

The airline also forecast significant revenue growth during the peak travel months as demand across European leisure markets continues to recover and expand.

Wizz Air has spent recent years aggressively expanding across Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia, adding aircraft and new routes while competing heavily on price.

Satellite Internet Becoming An Airline Battleground

Satellite connectivity is increasingly becoming a competitive differentiator among airlines as passenger expectations shift toward uninterrupted connectivity throughout flights.

Unlike traditional air-to-ground internet systems, satellite networks such as Starlink allow aircraft to maintain coverage across oceans and remote regions while delivering faster connection speeds.

With the planned rollout beginning in 2027, Wizz Air is betting that reliable onboard connectivity will become an increasingly important factor for travelers choosing between airlines.
