Wizz Air has announced the reopening of its base in Târgu Mureș, marking a significant expansion of its Romanian operations. The airline has allocated a new Airbus A320neo aircraft to the airport, bringing its total winter fleet in Romania to 39 aircraft. With the restart of the base, Wizz Air now offers 10 routes to eight countries from Târgu Mureș “Transylvania” International Airport, with fares starting from RON 79.
Târgu Mureș holds a notable place in the airline’s history as the first Romanian airport Wizz Air served, launching its inaugural flight there in 2006. Nearly two decades later, the carrier is returning with an expanded commitment. The newly based aircraft will enable the launch of nine additional routes beginning 29 March 2026, connecting Târgu Mureș to Brussels Charleroi, Larnaca, Paris Beauvais, Dortmund, Memmingen, Milan Bergamo, Rome Fiumicino, Basel and London Luton, alongside the existing Budapest service.
Since entering the Romanian market, Wizz Air has continued to expand its footprint across the country. The airline now operates 219 routes from 13 airports, serving 82 destinations across 27 countries. It has also established nine operational bases in Romania, including Bucharest Băneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iași, Sibiu, Suceava, Timișoara and now Târgu Mureș. Wizz Air employs more than 1,600 people in the country.
Speaking at a press conference, András Radó, head of communications at Wizz Air, said the reopening of the Târgu Mureș base represents a milestone for the airline. “Nearly two decades later, we are returning with renewed commitment by allocating a modern Airbus A320neo aircraft, launching nine new routes and offering 10 connections in total. Romania remains a key market for us, with 43 announced aircraft operating within the country and an ever-evolving network.”
Local officials also welcomed the development. Csibi Attila-Zoltán, vice president of the Mureș County Council, described the reopening as “a landmark moment,” adding that the region is poised to reclaim its strategic connectivity to Europe. Airport director Peti András noted that preparing to host a based aircraft required significant personnel development, technology upgrades and strengthened safety systems.
Wizz Air continues to position itself as a leading low-cost option for travellers, supported by its Customer First-Compass product pillar and the ongoing expansion of its fleet, with more than 300 new aircraft on order. The airline emphasises its 100 percent digital-first approach and its commitment to operating one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in Europe.
