Bunkhouse Hotels has opened Hotel Daphne, a new 49-room boutique property in Houston’s historic Heights neighborhood. The hotel marks the brand’s latest expansion in Houston, following the recent debut of Hotel Saint Augustine in Montrose, and brings Bunkhouse’s signature blend of design-led hospitality and community focus to one of the city’s most storied enclaves.
Set within a newly constructed five-story brick building designed with Blanchard A+D, Hotel Daphne reflects the architectural character of the Heights through stepped parapets, steel sash windows and white-painted brick reminiscent of the area’s industrial heritage. Landscape design by McDugald Steele incorporates heritage oak trees to integrate the hotel into the surrounding neighborhood fabric.
Drawing inspiration from the Greek mythological figure Daphne – and the namesake dog of the hotel’s owners – the property merges themes of autonomy, creativity and transformation. This narrative is woven into the guest experience through layered design elements, from handmade tilework and rich textiles to a palette of warm neutrals accented by saturated tones. Public spaces include a lobby anchored by a custom front desk wrapped in handmade tile, a vintage Murano chandelier and a semi-circular modular sofa that functions as a communal gathering point. An adjoining 350-square-foot library doubles as a private dining or cocktail venue, complete with onyx chess tables and artworks from the Ackerley family collection.
Hypsi, the hotel’s all-day restaurant and lounge, is led by chef Terrence Gallivan, a two-time James Beard Award nominee whose background includes New York’s Michelin-starred Alto. Hypsi presents a modern interpretation of Italian-style aperitivo using Gulf Coast ingredients, offering handmade pastas, shareable plates, a tableside mozzarella cart and a beverage menu featuring Italian wines, spritzes and craft cocktails. Interiors blend deep hues, vintage details and a blueberry lava-stone bar, while a vine-covered courtyard expands the dining space. Breakfast and dinner are now available, with lunch service launching in January.
Ben Ackerley, co-owner, described the project as long overdue for the neighborhood. “The Heights is the coolest neighborhood on earth and has long been starved for a hotel option befitting its noteworthy architecture, unique history and artistic spirit,” he said. Bunkhouse’s brand and marketing RVP Erin Lindsey added that Hotel Daphne aims to be a neighborhood gathering place where guests and locals alike can “linger for a while” in an environment rooted in comfort and creativity.
The hotel’s 49 rooms and suites blend serenity with playful design elements, featuring custom beds with psychedelic landscape textiles, mohair seating and Arts and Crafts-inspired credenzas. Select rooms include private terraces overlooking the courtyard. Hotel Daphne offers dog-friendly accommodations, room service and concierge amenities designed to create a thoughtful, community-oriented stay.
Regional general manager Omar Abreu said the opening reinforces Bunkhouse’s commitment to expanding in Texas, where the brand now operates seven of its nine hotels. The property also follows the opening of Jo’s Coffee’s first Houston Heights location earlier this year.
Hotel Daphne sits one block from the Heights’ iconic 19th Street shopping district, offering guests a locally rooted hospitality experience that celebrates the neighborhood’s creative energy and historic charm. Starting room rates begin at USD 359 per night.
