Poland has decided to shut down Russia’s Consulate General in Kraków following accusations of sabotage by Russian intelligence services. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced the decision, citing concrete evidence linking Russian agents to a fire that destroyed a major shopping center in Warsaw.
“Due to evidence showing that Russian services committed a disgraceful act of sabotage against a shopping center on Marywilska Street, I have decided to withdraw consent for the operation of the Russian consulate in Kraków,” Sikorski stated.
The incident in question occurred on May 12, 2024, when a massive fire broke out at the Marywilska Street shopping complex in Warsaw. The blaze completely consumed the facility, destroying around 1,400 shops and service points.
