India Boycotts Turkey and Azerbaijan as Indian travelers pivot toward destinations with stronger political ties, notably Armenia and Greece. Major travel agencies including Travomint, EaseMyTrip, and Cox & Kings have halted packages to Turkey and Azerbaijan in response to public calls for a boycott after the Pahalgam attack. Instead, tour operators are promoting itineraries to countries perceived as allies of India.
Armenia has become especially popular, thanks to its long-standing defense cooperation with India that deepened in 2020. Agencies report a surge in bookings for Yerevan’s historic sites and the Caucasus’ renowned wine regions. Greek islands and ancient monuments in Athens are also seeing renewed interest, as travelers seek sun-soaked beaches alongside cultural exploration.
While tourism cancellations to Turkey and Azerbaijan are symbolic acts of solidarity, they carry real economic weight. In 2024, some 330,000 Indian tourists visited Turkey and about 240,000 flew to Azerbaijan. The loss of this revenue is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars, affecting hotels, tour operators, and local businesses that once catered to Indian visitors.
