Uzbekistan Launches High-Speed Railway with Hyundai Rotem Trains

Uzbekistan launches high-speed railway with the introduction of state-of-the-art Hyundai Rotem trains. The newly completed high-speed railway line is designed to bolster Uzbekistan’s transport infrastructure, enhance regional connectivity, and support the country’s growth as a logistics and tourism hub in Central Asia.

The high-speed trains, built with cutting-edge distributed traction technology, are set to revolutionize travel in Uzbekistan, offering faster, more reliable journeys for both domestic commuters and international tourists. The new rail service connects the historic cities of Urgench and Khiva, reducing travel time and showcasing Uzbekistan’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure.

On May 1, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally inspected the newly electrified railway segment, highlighting the strategic importance of this high-speed transport initiative. The project is part of a broader national development agenda that seeks to integrate Uzbekistan into the global transportation network and provide next-generation travel options for its citizens.

In June 2024, Uzbekistan signed a $200 million contract with South Korean companies Hyundai Rotem and KORAIL. The agreement covers the procurement and long-term maintenance of six high-speed trains, each consisting of seven cars with a total capacity of 389 passengers. These trains, capable of speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour, will serve a network spanning over 1,200 kilometers across the country.

The new trains will not only reduce congestion on traditional rail lines but also improve the overall travel experience by offering superior acceleration, energy efficiency, and comfort. One of the most transformative impacts will be felt along the route between Tashkent and Khiva, where travel time will be dramatically reduced from 14 hours to just 7 hours and 40 minutes. This time-saving will enhance tourism, commerce, and daily commuting between these key cities.
