American Airlines and DFW International Airport have unveiled a bold new plan to expand Terminal F, increasing the investment to $4 billion in a major step toward creating the world’s largest airline hub. The upgraded terminal will feature a modern design, double the number of gates originally planned, and new facilities that elevate the travel experience for millions of passengers.
This ambitious project aims to enhance international operations, create more premium lounges and passenger spaces, and improve the overall flow through the airport with innovations in check-in and baggage handling. Travelers can also look forward to a new parking garage with curbside circulation and an advanced baggage drop-off system to streamline access and reduce waiting times.
Terminal F, fully operated by American Airlines, will be connected to Terminal D with a new walkway and Skylink station, improving accessibility across Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The terminal will be a hub for widebody aircraft and long-haul international flights, with expanded room for shops, restaurants, and public art installations.
The $4 billion expansion represents a significant increase from the original plans and reflects the growing importance of the Dallas-Fort Worth region as a global transportation center. The terminal will also extend American’s lease agreement with DFW through 2043, ensuring a long-term partnership.
Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, called the project a “clear path to becoming the largest airline hub in the world,” emphasizing DFW’s critical role in the airline’s operations. He also highlighted how the new terminal would enhance the customer journey with state-of-the-art amenities and spaces.
The announcement received strong support from city officials and airport leadership. Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson praised the project as a “monumental investment” that will boost the city’s global connectivity and economy. Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker echoed those sentiments, saying the development will keep pace with the region’s rapid growth.
DFW Board Chair DeMetris Sampson emphasized the airport’s commitment to sharing this growth with the local business community, while Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW, noted that passenger traffic has grown by 50% in the last decade—underscoring the need for more capacity and innovation.
Originally announced in 2023 as a 15-gate terminal accessed via Terminal E, the plan for Terminal F has since evolved to meet increasing demand and future projections. The new layout will also reflect DFW’s signature architectural style, blending comfort with cutting-edge design.
With construction now set to accelerate, travelers can expect to see the first results of this expansion sooner than anticipated. The revamped Terminal F is poised to become a major symbol of North Texas’ economic rise and aviation leadership.
