Hanimaadhoo Airport Expansion to Feature Manta Ray-Shaped Marine Terminal

The expansion of Hanimaadhoo Airport in the northern Maldives is progressing, with the project estimated to cost $800 million. The Indian government is providing financial support for the project.

According to the Maldivian Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, the project is currently 67.5% complete. The airport is expected to be operational by November, but some estimates suggest the terminal will start serving passengers closer to March next year.

Upon completion, the runway will be extended to 2,500 meters, allowing the airport to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. The terminal’s capacity will reach 1.3 million passengers per year.

The project also includes the construction of a marine terminal with berths for seaplanes and ferries. Designed in the shape of a manta ray, the terminal will emphasize the country’s close relationship with marine life. The two-story building will feature passenger service areas, waiting lounges, duty-free shops, VIP lounges, prayer rooms, relaxation zones, and childcare facilities.

“This project will have a transformative impact on the entire northern region of the Maldives, enhancing transportation connectivity and promoting tourism development,” said Munu Mahawar, the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives.
