According to statistics released by the island nation’s Ministry of Tourism, the Maldives has surpassed the milestone of 1 million tourist arrivals in the first half of 2024. This represents a 9.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
China remains the top source of tourists to the Maldives, with over 136,000 Chinese visitors so far in 2024. Russia follows in second place with nearly 115,000 tourists, while the United Kingdom is in third place with 98,000 visitors. Italy is in fourth place with 83,000 tourists.
Maldivian authorities are optimistic that they will achieve a record-breaking 2 million tourist arrivals in 2024. In 2023, the country welcomed 1.8 million visitors, while in 2022, the number was 1.6 million.
The Maldives is renowned for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and luxurious resorts. The country’s tourism industry is a major contributor to the economy, employing over 25,000 people.
