Hungary will construct a third terminal at Budapest Airport and develop road and rail routes connecting it to the capital. Hungary’s Economy Minister, Márton Nagy, announced that the government aims to transform the airport into a major hub.
According to Reuters, the Hungarian state company Corvinus Zrt. and French co-investor Vinci Airports acquired Budapest Airport last month. Corvinus Zrt. holds a majority stake of 80%, while its French partner owns the remaining share.
The new owners estimate that the new terminal will be completed no earlier than 2032. During this period, new highways and railway lines around the airport will also be constructed, costing approximately 2 billion euros. Nagy also mentioned that the government is in talks with the Qatar Investment Authority about purchasing a stake of less than 10% in the airport.
The minister added that additional taxes on airlines will be gradually phased out starting next year. These additional taxes, amounting to $82.28 million, were introduced in 2022 to fill budget gaps. They included a tax of 10 to 25 euros per departing passenger from Hungary, which had been criticized by airlines.
This strategic development is expected to enhance Budapest Airport’s capacity and connectivity, significantly boosting its role in international air travel.
