Copenhagen, renowned for its green initiatives, is launching a new trial initiative called “CopenPay” starting this Monday. Under this scheme, tourist attractions across the city will offer free meals, train tickets, and museum tours to visitors who engage in sustainable activities such as picking up trash or using eco-friendly transportation like bicycles.
The initiative, devised by the tourist board, aims to convert “green actions into currency for cultural experiences.” It underscores Copenhagen’s commitment to sustainability, with residents often commuting by bike and enjoying the city’s clean canals.
For tourists, Copenhagen can be pricey due to its 25% value-added tax. The introduction of CopenPay may thus provide welcome relief. According to a recent poll by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Copenhagen ranks eighth globally in terms of cost of living.
To claim rewards, participants may need to present tickets, arrive by bicycle, or provide photographic evidence of their activities. The system operates largely on trust, with officials relying on visitors’ honesty to participate effectively.
This innovative initiative not only promotes sustainable tourism but also enhances visitors’ experiences by encouraging them to contribute positively to Copenhagen’s environment during their stay.
