Greece has announced the closure of tourist sites and schools in Athens due to the first summer heatwave, Sky News reports.
Temperatures are forecasted to reach a maximum of 43°C (109.4°F) in some parts of Greece on Wednesday and Thursday.
As a result, the popular archaeological site in Athens, the Acropolis, was closed from 9 AM to 2 PM (GMT) on Wednesday due to life-threatening temperatures. Red Cross medics distributed water bottles to tourists, and primary schools and kindergartens in the southern regions of the country were closed until Friday, when temperatures are expected to drop.
In Athens, drones equipped with thermal cameras will be used to coordinate public health measures.

In July of last year, Greece experienced an abnormal heatwave that led to hundreds of fires.
This unusual rise in temperature coincided with the peak tourist season. Due to numerous wildfires, the popular tourist island of Rhodes was severely affected, resulting in the unprecedented evacuation of nearly 20,000 people.
