The Maldives government announced that it will ban Israeli citizens from entering the Indian Ocean archipelago, a decision driven by increasing public anger in the predominantly Muslim nation over the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The president’s office revealed on Sunday that the Cabinet has resolved to amend existing laws to prohibit Israeli passport holders from visiting the Maldives. Additionally, a subcommittee will be established to manage the implementation of this new policy.
President Mohamed Muizzu has also stated his intention to appoint a special envoy to evaluate the needs of Palestinians and to initiate a fundraising campaign to support them.
In response, Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, recommended that Israelis avoid traveling to the Maldives, even if they possess foreign passports. He also advised those currently in the Maldives to consider leaving the country. Last year, nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives, accounting for 0.6% of the total tourist arrivals.
