Jetstar to Connect Brisbane and Canberra

Jetstar has today announced it will launch new flights between Brisbane and Canberra, marking the first time the low-cost carrier has operated services into Australia’s capital city.

Taking off from 2 September, the new service will offer five return flights per week with an Airbus A320, providing nearly 100,000 seats between the two cities per annum.

To celebrate the new route, Jetstar will launch a flash sale from 11am today (AEST) with fares from $75 one way.

Jetstar Group CEO Gareth Evans said Canberra marks Jetstar’s 22nd destination within Australia, with demand for low fares domestic travel continuing to grow.

“We’re excited to introduce our great low fares to Canberra for the first time in our 17-year history and thank the ACT Government for their support.

“Our flights will take off in time for Floriade, helping to bring thousands of interstate visitors to one of the major festivals on Canberra’s calendar.

“With international borders closed, there’s is huge appetite for low fares travel domestically. We know these flights will be really popular and provide a great boost for tourism operators and businesses as visitors explore everything Canberra and the region has to offer.”

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the ACT welcomes the announcement by Jetstar to start flights between Canberra and Brisbane.

“Jetstar’s entry to the Canberra market will not only make travel from South East Queensland to Canberra cheaper and easier but provide a significant opportunity to work with Jetstar to promote our city across their extensive network.

“Canberrans will win with affordable flights connecting them to popular Queensland holiday destinations, to see family and friends or travel for business.”

Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the new Jetstar flights would make it even easier to enjoy a Brisbane getaway.

“We know Canberrans have shivered through a long, cold winter and deserve a healthy dose of Queensland sunshine,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Jetstar’s new deals are just the excuse you need to come out of the cold and enjoy a great Brisbane visitor experience. Brisbane has the sunshine you’ll appreciate plus amazing food, wine, cultural, wildlife and bay experiences, all within easy reach of the city.

“Until mid-October, Brisbane also offers a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to see the European Masterpieces Exhibition direct from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

“Brisbane will be the only place you can experience The Met’s European Masterpieces without leaving Australia, so now’s the time to start planning your Queensland holiday.”

Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO, Gert-Jan de Graaff, said that today’s announcement is great news for Queensland and Brisbane, with travellers given more options than ever before to take off and enjoy Australia’s Capital.

“It is also perfect timing for Canberrans to come up north and experience sunny Brisbane and Queensland.

“I congratulate Jetstar on this exciting news and my team and I very much look forward to working together to maximise these new services.”
