Travel across south-east Queensland is set to face significant disruption throughout April, with widespread rail closures affecting key routes during one of the busiest holiday and event periods of the year.
Transport authorities have confirmed that from Good Friday through to April 26, rolling track closures will impact most train services across the region. The timing coincides with Easter travel, Anzac Day, and a packed calendar of major sporting events, including NRL and AFL fixtures, creating added pressure on already strained transport options.
For visitors and residents alike, the changes could complicate journeys to Brisbane Airport, the Gold Coast, and popular coastal destinations. Lines affected include the Airport, Beenleigh, Caboolture, Doomben, Gold Coast, Redcliffe Peninsula, Shorncliffe, and Sunshine Coast routes.
From Good Friday until April 11, multiple lines will operate with closures and altered timetables, while disruptions on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines are expected to continue through April 26.
The works are part of a broader infrastructure push across the region, including progress on the Cross River Rail project alongside essential upgrades and maintenance. While the long-term goal is to improve connectivity, the short-term impact for travellers is unavoidable.
Rail services on affected lines will be replaced by buses, significantly increasing travel times and requiring additional planning. Authorities have advised passengers to allow extra time for their journeys, particularly when heading to the airport or attending major events where timing is critical.
The disruption comes at a challenging moment, as a fuel supply crunch has already pushed many commuters and travellers to rely more heavily on public transport.
For those planning trips during April, flexibility will be key. Checking updated timetables, allowing for delays, and considering alternative routes or departure times could make the difference between a smooth journey and a missed connection.
