Adventure travellers are heading 34 miles off the coast of North Carolina to spend the night at one of the world’s most unusual accommodations – a restored offshore tower perched 80 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.
Known as Frying Pan Tower, the former U.S. Coast Guard station has become a bucket-list destination for thrill-seekers looking for an experience far removed from a conventional hotel stay. Accessible only by boat or helicopter, the structure sits in waters renowned for abundant marine life and unpredictable weather.
Historic Tower Turned Ocean Retreat
Constructed in 1964, Frying Pan Tower stands in an area historically known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” because of the large number of shipwrecks along North Carolina’s coastline.
Since opening to overnight guests in 2012, the restored platform has welcomed visitors looking for a unique offshore adventure while supporting ongoing preservation of the historic structure.
Accommodation costs approximately US$200 per person per night, with a minimum three-night stay. According to charter boat captain Austin Aycock, some visitors have remained at the tower for as long as two weeks.
Life 80 Feet Above the Atlantic
Guests reach the main platform using a high-speed lift that carries them approximately 80 feet above the ocean.
The tower accommodates up to 12 guests across eight bedrooms and offers facilities including a fully equipped kitchen, hot showers, laundry facilities, high-speed internet powered by solar energy and freshwater produced by a reverse osmosis desalination system.
A professional chef can also be arranged for private groups.
Fishing, Diving and Ocean Views
Visitors can enjoy fishing, snorkelling over the protected reef beneath the platform, skeet shooting with biodegradable clay targets and even hitting biodegradable golf balls designed to dissolve into fish food.
The tower’s expansive 5,000-square-foot helipad also serves as a popular space for stargazing, watching sunrises and relaxing above the open ocean.
An Adventure Unlike Any Other
While the tower offers many modern comforts, its remote location means visitors are far from conventional services. Medical emergencies require evacuation by helicopter or a lengthy boat journey back to shore, and the structure lies in a region regularly affected by Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes.
Despite its isolated setting, Frying Pan Tower has gained widespread attention on social media, with videos of visitors arriving by boat attracting millions of views and highlighting one of the most extraordinary overnight experiences available in the United States.
