Garbage Landslide in the Philippines Kills at Least Eight People

Search and rescue operations are continuing in the Philippines after a massive garbage landslide struck a landfill in the city of Cebu. At least eight people have been confirmed dead, while a minimum of 28 others remain missing.

Rescue teams have been working for a second day, but hopes of finding survivors are fading with each passing hour. Cebu mayor Nestor Archival said operations are ongoing and have not yet been called off.

Most of the victims are believed to be landfill workers. Informal housing structures were also located near the site, contributing to the number of casualties.

At least one person survived the disaster. A 31-year-old office worker, Jailord Antigua, was inside an administrative building when the mass of waste collapsed and engulfed the area. He managed to escape on his own.

The official cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed. Preliminary assessments suggest the garbage landslide may have been triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall. Saturated soil is believed to have destabilized the multi-meter-high layers of waste, leading to the collapse.
