Super Typhoon Bavi Batters Guam and Northern Mariana Islands

Super Typhoon Bavi battered the U.S. Pacific territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, bringing destructive winds of up to 180 mph (290 km/h), widespread power outages, and significant damage to homes and infrastructure.

Authorities reported no immediate fatalities or serious injuries, although emergency officials cautioned that the full extent of the destruction had yet to be determined as dangerous weather conditions delayed damage assessments and recovery efforts.

Rota Takes the Direct Hit

The island of Rota, home to approximately 1,500 residents, bore the brunt of the powerful storm after Bavi made a direct strike early Monday. The super typhoon knocked out electricity, water supplies, and communications across much of the island while uprooting trees, damaging buildings, and bringing down power lines.

Local emergency officials described the destruction as extensive. Prior to landfall, the U.S. National Weather Service had warned that a direct impact from Bavi could leave much of Rota “uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer.”

Damage Reported Across the Region

Although Rota experienced the strongest winds, neighboring islands also felt the effects of the powerful storm. Tinian, northern Guam, and southern Saipan were lashed by winds comparable to those of a Category 1 hurricane, causing additional power outages, fallen trees, and localized structural damage.

Emergency crews began clearing roads and restoring essential services where conditions allowed, but officials warned that recovery efforts could take days as hazardous weather and debris continued to hamper operations.

Residents Urged to Remain Sheltered

Authorities urged residents to remain indoors until the all-clear is issued, warning of ongoing dangers from damaged power lines, unstable trees, flooding, and flying debris. Emergency management teams continue to assess affected communities while restoring critical infrastructure and communications.

Super Typhoon Bavi is among the strongest tropical cyclones to affect the region this year, highlighting the vulnerability of Pacific island communities to increasingly powerful storms during the western Pacific typhoon season.
