Nearly Two Million Evacuated as Typhoon Bavi Hits Eastern China

Chinese authorities have evacuated nearly two million people as Typhoon Bavi brings torrential rain and strong winds to eastern China, triggering widespread transport disruption and emergency measures.

According to local authorities, more than 1.7 million residents have been evacuated from Zhejiang Province, while over 100,000 people have been moved to safety in Beijing due to heavy rainfall.

Mass Evacuations in Zhejiang

The largest evacuations have taken place in the coastal city of Wenzhou, where hundreds of thousands of residents were relocated as a precaution against the storm’s potential impact.

Local officials said the evacuations were carried out in preparation for the “worst-case scenario,” while shop owners reinforced storefronts by securing metal shutters with wooden supports ahead of the typhoon’s arrival.

Flights and Trains Disrupted

Schools across Zhejiang have been closed, and more than 400 flights have been cancelled as severe weather swept across the region.

Rail services have also been suspended on numerous routes.

Authorities reported that more than 130,000 people were evacuated in neighbouring Fujian Province, while approximately 34,000 residents were relocated in Shanghai.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast

China Central Television (CCTV) warned that Zhejiang and Fujian are expected to experience “extremely heavy rainfall” as Typhoon Bavi moves through eastern China.

The latest storm comes after extreme weather earlier this week caused widespread flooding across southern and central China, leaving dozens of people dead and causing extensive damage to infrastructure and communities.
