Mandarin Oriental Opens Its First Hotel in Austria

Mandarin Oriental has made its long-anticipated entry into Austria with the opening of Mandarin Oriental, Vienna, a meticulously restored landmark set within the capital’s prestigious First District. Situated along the historic Ringstrasse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hotel blends the architectural heritage of early 20th-century Vienna with the brand’s signature contemporary refinement.

The building, originally designed by Austrian architect Alfred Keller as a courthouse, has been reimagined by luxury interior design studio Goddard Littlefair. The result is a warm, serene retreat spread across four floors, offering 86 thoughtfully composed rooms and 52 suites. Bathed in natural light and framed by bespoke furnishings in calming neutral palettes, the spaces evoke Viennese charm while embracing understated modernity. Secessionist-inspired fabrics, sculptural details and elegantly proportioned bathrooms underscore the design’s connection to Vienna’s artistic lineage.

At the centre of the hotel, a restored courtyard serves as a tranquil focal point, while arrival spaces feature sculptural chandeliers and the original grand staircase—a visual reminder of the building’s storied past.

The property introduces an elevated culinary programme under the direction of Chef Thomas Seifried, who oversees four dining venues that reinterpret Austrian heritage through a cosmopolitan lens. Seasonal ingredients, local influences and global culinary techniques form the foundation of the menus, positioning the hotel as a new culinary destination within the capital.

The spa at Mandarin Oriental, Vienna takes inspiration from the city’s artistic and musical traditions. Treatments combine Asian wellness philosophies with elements of Viennese culture—ranging from waltz-inspired movement therapies to sound-based rituals such as gong baths. The aim is to offer guests a sense of harmony, renewal and immersive cultural connection.

A defining symbol of the new property is its bespoke Mandarin Oriental fan, reimagined by acclaimed Austrian artist Peter Jellitsch. His design is a contemporary interplay of structure and spontaneity: expressive brushstrokes layered across a geometric grid, drawing on influences from Vienna’s Art Nouveau movement. The composition reflects the hotel’s dual identity—a dialogue between heritage and modernity, craftsmanship and innovation. With its blend of colour, form and digital-physical interplay, the artwork stands as both an emblem of the brand and a tribute to Vienna’s creative spirit.

With its arrival in Vienna, Mandarin Oriental brings together art, history and contemporary luxury in a landmark opening that elevates the city’s hospitality landscape while honouring its cultural legacy.
