Wizz Air Expands Sofia Base with 7 New Routes and More Flights Across Europe and Beyond

Wizz Air has announced an expansion of its operations from Sofia Airport. The low-cost carrier will station a seventh aircraft at its Sofia base in 2025 and launch seven new direct routes to exciting destinations across Europe and North Africa.

The newly added cities include Prague, Turin, Lamezia Terme, Chișinău, Palma de Mallorca, Marrakesh, and Warsaw – all offering fresh opportunities for both weekend escapes and deeper cultural immersion. Fares start from just 38.99 BGN, available through wizzair.com and the mobile app.

A Bigger Role for Sofia in European Air Travel

The expansion reflects Wizz Air’s long-term strategy to strengthen its presence in Bulgaria and the region. The new aircraft will boost the airline’s annual capacity from Sofia to 1.29 million seats, reinforcing its leadership with a 29% market share at Sofia Airport. Importantly, several of the new destinations were previously unserved, opening untapped routes for both outbound travelers and inbound tourists.

“This expansion is a significant step in our long-term development strategy,” said András Szabo, Wizz Air’s Commercial Officer for Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. “Sofia is solidifying its role as a key hub in our network, and we are proud to offer Bulgarian passengers even more affordable and sustainable travel options.”

More Flights, More Flexibility

In addition to the new routes, flight frequencies will increase on four existing lines: Barcelona, Hamburg, Milan-Bergamo, and Basel. This offers year-round flexibility for travelers seeking popular European city breaks or extended stays.

Whether you’re dreaming of the coastal beauty of Palma de Mallorca, the historic streets of Chișinău, or the vibrant souks of Marrakesh, Wizz Air is widening the horizon for Bulgarian travelers – while also bringing more international visitors to explore Bulgaria’s unique mix of mountains, culture, and seaside charm.

20 Years in Bulgaria and Growing Strong

The announcement was celebrated at Sofia Airport with a press conference attended by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, Deputy Minister of Tourism Pavlin Petrov, and Sofia Airport CEO Jesus Caballero. Their shared message: this expansion is not just about air routes – it’s about economic growth, tourism development, and positioning Sofia as a modern, connected European capital.

“This is a clear sign of trust in Sofia Airport’s future,” Caballero noted, highlighting the airport’s vision of becoming a 5-star regional hub.

Wizz Air’s latest move comes during its 20th anniversary year in Bulgaria, marking two decades since its first flight from Sofia in 2005 – and it’s clear the airline has no intention of slowing down.
