Dusit Opens 30 Room Lakeside Hotel in Japan’s Hokkaido

Dusit International has expanded its presence in Japan with the opening of WE Hotel Toya, Dusit Collection, a 30 room lakeside retreat in Hokkaido.

The Thai hotel group said the property is designed as a tranquil escape beside Lake Toya and forms part of its wider strategy to grow in the Japanese market.

The hotel was created by Kengo Kuma & Associates, the internationally acclaimed architecture studio led by Kengo Kuma, and is positioned as an upscale resort aimed at travellers seeking a quiet nature-based stay.

Dusit said the opening strengthens its footprint in Japan, where it has been building a portfolio of hotels and hospitality projects. The company described the new property as a key addition to the Dusit Collection brand, which focuses on distinctive upscale stays.

Hokkaido remains one of Japan’s most popular destinations for domestic and international visitors, known for its scenery, seasonal activities and hot spring resorts. Lake Toya, part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park area, is a long-established draw for travellers looking for lake views and outdoor experiences.

The opening comes as hotel groups continue to target Japan, where demand has grown with the rebound in travel across Asia and beyond. Operators have been adding branded properties in major cities and regional destinations alike as they compete for both leisure and premium guests.

Dusit has been expanding outside Thailand for several years, with Japan becoming an increasingly important market in its international network. The company says the new hotel reflects its strategy to combine local design influence with hospitality service standards from its wider portfolio.

WE Hotel Toya, Dusit Collection, is likely to appeal to travellers looking for a small-scale, design-led stay in a quieter part of northern Japan. Its lakeside location and collaboration with Kengo Kuma & Associates place it firmly in the premium end of the market.

The launch also highlights the continued appeal of Hokkaido as a year-round travel destination. In summer, visitors come for hiking, lake cruises and cooler weather, while winter brings skiing and snow-based activities across the island.

Dusit said the property adds to its growing list of international openings. The company has framed Japan as a core part of its overseas expansion plans, with a focus on destinations that combine strong leisure appeal and distinctive local character.

For travellers, the opening adds another boutique-style option in a region better known for larger resorts and traditional ryokan. For Dusit, it marks another step in a broader push to build a more visible global presence through carefully selected properties.
