Hilton Expands Luxury Footprint in Japan With New LXR Hotels in Tokyo and Hakone

Hilton has announced a significant expansion of its luxury portfolio in Japan with two new LXR Hotels & Resorts properties set to open in Tokyo and Hakone over the next two years.

The additions will strengthen the presence of Hilton’s luxury collection brand in one of Asia’s most important hospitality markets, bringing distinctive, destination-driven experiences to both the Japanese capital and one of the country’s most famous resort regions.

Historic Tokyo Landmark Joins LXR Collection

The iconic Hotel Gajoen in Tokyo’s Meguro district will become part of LXR Hotels & Resorts in 2027, marking the brand’s debut in the Japanese capital.

The property, which traces its history back nearly a century, is widely regarded as one of Tokyo’s most culturally significant hotels and is known for its extraordinary Japanese artwork, craftsmanship and architectural design.

Before officially joining the LXR portfolio, the hotel is expected to resume room and restaurant operations in mid-2026 following a phased renovation and enhancement programme.

The hotel is home to the historic Hyakudan Kaidan, or Hundred-Step Staircase, the only remaining original wooden structure within the complex and a designated Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Once fully relaunched under the LXR brand, the property will offer 60 guestrooms, including suites exceeding 100 square metres, alongside five dining venues, a spa, fitness centre and event facilities.

Luxury Mountain Retreat Planned For Hakone

Hilton has also signed a new LXR Hotels & Resorts property in Hakone Gora, one of Japan’s most celebrated hot spring destinations.

Scheduled to open in summer 2028, the resort will become Hilton’s first hotel in Hakone and will overlook the forests of Momijidani, an area renowned for its spectacular autumn foliage.

The property will provide guests with easy access to some of Hakone’s most famous attractions, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the Hakone Museum of Art and Gora Park.

Located approximately 90 minutes from central Tokyo by train, Hakone remains one of Japan’s most popular luxury leisure destinations, attracting both domestic and international travelers.

LXR Continues Growth Across Japan

LXR Hotels & Resorts first entered Japan with the opening of ROKU KYOTO in 2021.

With the addition of Tokyo and Hakone, the brand continues to expand its Japanese footprint alongside future projects planned in Hiroshima and Niseko, Hokkaido.

“As demand for luxury brands continues to grow in Japan, the introduction of LXR Hotels & Resorts to Tokyo offers a new and distinctive option to both domestic and international travelers,” said Hirohisa Fujimoto, Vice President of Development for Japan and Micronesia at Hilton.

Hilton said the new signings reflect its broader strategy of expanding in high-demand luxury markets while responding to growing interest in experience-led travel and culturally immersive stays.
