A powerful earthquake has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami warning and prompting urgent evacuations across several coastal regions.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake reached a magnitude of 7.4–7.5 and occurred offshore near the city of Miyako at a depth of approximately 35 kilometres. Japan’s Meteorological Agency quickly issued a tsunami alert following the initial tremors.
Tsunami waves of up to three metres expected
Authorities warned that waves could reach heights of up to three metres, posing a serious risk to coastal communities.
The alert covers parts of northern Japan, including Iwate Prefecture, Aomori Prefecture and Hokkaido. Residents in these areas have been urged to move immediately away from the shoreline and seek higher ground.
Emergency messages were issued across affected regions, with officials stressing the importance of rapid evacuation as a precautionary measure.
Transport disruption and nationwide impact
The tremors were strong enough to be felt in Tokyo, highlighting the wide reach of the seismic event.
In Aomori Prefecture, high-speed rail services were temporarily suspended as a safety precaution, reflecting standard emergency protocols following major earthquakes in the country.
