Paris Bans Public Drinking As Deadly Heatwave Grips Europe

Paris has introduced a temporary ban on drinking alcohol in public as authorities respond to an extreme heatwave that has overwhelmed hospitals and pushed temperatures in the French capital to record June levels.

The restrictions came into force at midday on Friday and remain in effect until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, before returning during the same hours from Saturday to Sunday. The measures do not apply to restaurants and cafés with outdoor seating.

Authorities have also prohibited takeaway alcohol sales between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights in an effort to reduce alcohol-related medical emergencies during the period of extreme heat.

Paris recorded a June temperature record of 40.9°C on Wednesday as France experienced one of its most intense early-summer heatwaves in recent history.

Heatwave Forces Widespread Restrictions

The alcohol ban is part of a broader package of emergency measures introduced across the French capital. Numerous schools have been temporarily closed, while many city parks are now open around the clock to provide residents with cooler outdoor spaces.

Two of Paris’ most visited tourist attractions—the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum—have also reduced their operating hours because of the extreme temperatures.

Europe Faces Deadly Heatwave

The exceptional heat has affected much of Europe during the second half of June, placing healthcare systems under increasing pressure. Spain has reported at least 212 heat-related deaths as temperatures across southern and western Europe continue to reach dangerous levels.

Weather authorities continue to warn residents and visitors to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and follow local public health advice as the heatwave persists.
