Alaska Airlines has officially marked the start of construction on a major new aircraft maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Oregon and expanding operational support for both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.
The project was celebrated with a ceremonial groundbreaking and will add significant maintenance capacity at one of the airline’s key West Coast hubs. Once completed, the facility will help improve fleet reliability, reduce aircraft downtime and support future growth across the combined Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines network.
The investment also reflects the carrier’s continued confidence in Portland, where it remains the largest airline by daily departures.
Major Expansion At Portland International Airport
The new maintenance facility will be built adjacent to the existing Horizon Air Operations Center and Maintenance Hangar at Portland International Airport. The project will add approximately 125,000 square feet dedicated to indoor aircraft maintenance operations.
An additional 60,000 square feet will be devoted to office space, engine maintenance facilities, machine and sheet metal workshops and other operational support functions.
The expanded infrastructure will provide additional flexibility for maintenance teams while increasing the airline’s ability to handle routine servicing and unexpected repair work.
Capacity For Narrowbody And Widebody Aircraft
Once operational, the new hangar will be capable of accommodating up to three narrowbody aircraft or two widebody aircraft simultaneously.
The additional capacity will allow maintenance technicians to return aircraft to service more quickly and reduce pressure on existing maintenance facilities in Seattle and other locations throughout the airline’s network.
By increasing maintenance resources in Portland, Alaska Airlines expects to improve operational efficiency and strengthen support for its growing fleet.
More Than 100 New Skilled Jobs
The project is expected to create more than 100 highly skilled positions, including opportunities for aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers and aviation support professionals.
The expansion will further strengthen Portland’s role within Alaska Airlines’ operations while providing new employment opportunities in the region’s aviation sector.
The facility will support the nearly 3,000 Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air employees already based in the Portland area.
Long-Term Commitment To Portland
Alaska Airlines has served Portland since 1979 and has steadily expanded its presence over the decades. Today, the airline operates more than 130 daily departures from the city during the summer season, making it the largest carrier at Portland International Airport.
The new maintenance hangar represents one of the airline’s latest investments in infrastructure designed to support long-term growth and operational resilience.
As Alaska Airlines continues integrating Hawaiian Airlines into its broader network strategy, the additional maintenance capacity in Portland will play an important role in supporting both carriers while enhancing efficiency across the combined operation.
