Alaska Airlines has officially entered the European market with the launch of its first-ever nonstop flight between Seattle and Rome, marking a pivotal moment in the carrier’s evolution into a global airline.
The new seasonal service, which began on April 28, operates daily through October 23, offering the only nonstop connection between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.
A Strategic Step Into Europe
The route represents Alaska Airlines’ formal expansion into Europe, strengthening Seattle’s role as a growing international hub. By linking the Pacific Northwest directly with Italy, the airline is positioning itself to compete more aggressively on long-haul international routes.
Flight schedules are designed to maximise convenience for travellers. Departures from Seattle leave at 5:30 p.m., arriving in Rome at 1:15 p.m. the following day, allowing passengers to begin their stay immediately. Westbound flights depart Rome at 3:25 p.m., landing back in Seattle at 5:45 p.m.
Beyond point-to-point travel, the route improves connectivity between Europe and Hawai‘i, enabling one-stop itineraries via Seattle and opening a new gateway for European visitors heading to the islands.
New Business Class Suites Debut
Coinciding with the Rome launch, Alaska Airlines is introducing its new international Business Class Suites, signalling a major upgrade in its onboard product.
The service is operated using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring 34 newly designed suites as part of the airline’s updated global cabin concept and livery. The move underscores Alaska’s focus on enhancing premium travel as it expands across both Asia and Europe.
Expanding Cargo And Global Reach
In addition to passenger service, the new route supports Alaska’s growing cargo operations. From April 28, the airline becomes the first U.S. passenger carrier to offer daily nonstop cargo flights between Seattle and Rome, strengthening trade links between the Pacific Northwest and Italy.
With this addition, Alaska’s cargo network now spans 109 destinations worldwide, reflecting a parallel expansion strategy alongside its passenger operations.
A Milestone For A Growing Global Carrier
The Seattle–Rome route represents more than a new destination – it signals a broader shift in Alaska Airlines’ identity. Once primarily a domestic and regional carrier, the airline is now actively building a long-haul international network.
With further expansion planned, the Rome service marks the beginning of a
