Europa Nostra Awards 2026 Honors Five Projects Transforming Europe’s Cultural Heritage

Five cultural heritage projects from across Europe have received top recognition at the Europa Nostra Awards 2026, highlighting how historic buildings, traditional knowledge and cultural landscapes are increasingly being adapted for modern life.

The winning projects span monasteries, castles, music traditions and sustainability initiatives, demonstrating how preservation efforts are evolving beyond restoration to create living spaces and active communities.

The awards, regarded among Europe’s most important heritage recognitions, showcase how cultural conservation increasingly intersects with tourism, sustainability and community development.

Polirone Monastery Returns As Community Space In Italy

The restoration of the Polirone Monastery complex in northern Italy transformed one of the country’s most historically significant religious sites into a functioning community destination following extensive conservation work.

Originally founded in 1007, Polirone Monastery suffered major damage following earthquakes that rendered parts of the complex unusable.

Today, Polirone Monastery hosts museums, cultural institutions, educational facilities, meeting spaces and community organizations while introducing accessibility improvements including lifts, ramps and tactile guidance systems.

The restoration also introduced energy-saving solutions designed to protect historic interiors while reducing long-term environmental impact.

The Cypriot Fiddler, Din l-Art Ħelwa And Energy Efficiency Projects Receive Recognition

The Cypriot Fiddler project received recognition for documenting disappearing musical traditions and oral histories connected to traditional violin musicians across Cyprus.

Beyond preserving music itself, The Cypriot Fiddler captured dialects, local vocabulary and community stories that rarely appear in written archives.

Meanwhile, Malta’s volunteer organization Din l-Art Ħelwa was recognized for decades of work restoring historic buildings and protecting landscapes threatened by modern development.

Europe’s energy transition also featured prominently, with Ireland’s historic building energy efficiency initiative recognized for helping older structures adapt to modern climate goals without damaging heritage value.

Banffy Castle Restoration Wins Public Support

Banffy Castle in the Romanian village of Riscuța received additional recognition after winning public voting thanks to extensive restoration work that transformed the deteriorating estate into an active cultural destination.

Conservation efforts at Banffy Castle restored historic interiors, carved ceilings, fireplaces, stained glass, wooden details and landscaped surroundings using archival research.

Today, Banffy Castle serves local residents, tourists and heritage professionals through educational programs, community events and public access initiatives.

Together, projects such as Polirone Monastery, The Cypriot Fiddler, Din l-Art Ħelwa and Banffy Castle demonstrate how Europe’s heritage sector is increasingly moving beyond preserving monuments toward creating spaces that remain active, accessible and economically sustainable.
