Wizz Air Launches New Base in Turin

Wizz Air is accelerating its expansion in Italy with the announcement of a new operational base at Torino Airport, marking the airline’s seventh base in the country and a major boost for connectivity in Northern Italy.

The new base will officially launch on September 14, 2026, with a first Airbus A321neo aircraft stationed in Turin, followed by a second aircraft from October 25. The move represents a significant capacity increase, with each aircraft adding around 500,000 seats annually.

This strategic investment, developed in partnership with Torino Airport, is expected to generate substantial economic impact, including 80 direct jobs and around 700 indirect roles across related industries, reinforcing Turin’s position as a growing aviation hub.

A major expansion of routes from Turin

The launch of the base will transform the airport’s network, with Wizz Air introducing seven new routes and strengthening frequencies on existing ones.

Domestic connectivity will see a sharp increase, particularly on key routes linking Northern and Southern Italy. Flights to Rome Fiumicino will operate up to 11 times per week from mid-September, while a new connection to Naples will begin on December 1 with daily service. The Palermo route, launching in May 2026, will be upgraded to two daily flights later in the year.

International expansion will focus heavily on Spain, one of Europe’s most in-demand travel markets. New routes will connect Turin with Barcelona from September 14 with daily service, while Bilbao will be served three times weekly. Valencia will follow with four weekly flights starting September 15, with Madrid and Malaga joining the network in late October.

By 2026, Wizz Air will operate 16 routes to eight countries from Turin, offering nearly 1.3 million seats to passengers across the Piedmont region.

Strengthening Italy’s role in Wizz Air’s network

The airline has been steadily building its presence in Turin since launching operations there in 2004, carrying more than 3 million passengers overall. In 2025 alone, Wizz Air operated over 2,100 flights from the airport, transporting more than 450,000 passengers across Italy and Europe.

The new base signals a deeper long-term commitment to the Italian market, with Turin positioned as a key node linking domestic routes with high-demand European destinations.

According to Andras Szabo, Wizz Air’s Network Officer, the expansion is designed to both enhance regional accessibility and strengthen connections between Italy and the rest of Europe. The airline is also aiming to make travel more affordable, particularly on routes that have traditionally been underserved.

Economic boost and regional impact

Local authorities see the development as a major opportunity for economic growth. The addition of new routes and aircraft is expected to stimulate tourism, support business travel and increase the international visibility of Turin and the wider Piedmont region.

Andrea Andorno, CEO of Torino Airport, emphasized that the investment reflects the airport’s growing attractiveness and its long-term development strategy. The expansion is expected to improve competitiveness while opening new opportunities for the regional economy.

To mark the launch, the airport has introduced a limited-time promotion offering discounted parking for travel periods between September and early December 2026.

A broader shift toward underserved markets

The Turin base also reflects a wider strategy by Wizz Air to expand into secondary cities and underserved routes, using its Airbus A321neo fleet to deliver higher capacity with lower environmental impact.

As airlines across Europe compete for market share, investments like this highlight a shift toward regional hubs that can offer both growth potential and strong local demand.

For travelers, the result is clear: more routes, more frequency, and more affordable options – with Turin emerging as a key gateway in Italy’s evolving aviation landscape.
