Wizz Air is strengthening its presence in Italy’s capital, reinforcing Rome Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport as a central pillar of its network. The airline has confirmed the arrival of its 15th Airbus A321neo at the Rome base, alongside the launch of eight new international routes and increased frequencies on several existing services.
The move reflects the strategic importance of Rome within Wizz Air’s Italian operations and comes amid growing passenger demand. It also highlights the airline’s ongoing cooperation with ADR, Aeroporti di Roma, as Wizz Air continues to consolidate Fiumicino as its largest base in the country.
New routes and broader connectivity
With the additional aircraft, Wizz Air is launching eight new destinations from Rome, significantly expanding its international reach. Malta will be served daily, offering year-round flexibility between the Italian capital and the Mediterranean island.
Seasonal leisure demand is also addressed with new services to Minorca and Varna, both operating three times weekly. Greek island connectivity will be enhanced through new routes to Rhodes, operating four times a week, and Kefalonia, served three times weekly.
Further north, Rome will gain a direct link to Tallinn, with flights three times per week, strengthening connectivity between Italy and the Baltic region. Eastern Europe is also a focus, with new twice-weekly services to Constanța in Romania and Pristina in Kosovo.
Tickets for all new routes are already available via the airline’s website and mobile app.
Rome at the centre of Wizz Air’s Italian strategy
The expansion follows a series of recent network additions from Rome, including routes to Glasgow, Brașov, Bordeaux, Košice and Oradea, as well as frequency increases on popular services to London Luton, Malaga, Valencia, Tel Aviv and Sharm El-Sheikh.
Rome Fiumicino has also been the launch point for high-profile initiatives such as Wizz Air’s “Let’s Get Lost” mystery flight, which recently landed in Chișinău, Moldova. These developments have helped cement the airport’s role as the airline’s primary Italian hub.
The strengthening of the Rome base also aligns with Wizz Air’s broader engagement with the local community. This includes the recently announced partnership with AS Roma, under which the airline has become the football club’s sleeve sponsor.
Strong performance and continued growth
According to Wizz Air, the scale-up at Fiumicino is delivering tangible results. In 2025, the airline operated more than 30,000 flights to and from the airport, carrying 6.5 million passengers, an increase of 4.7 percent compared with the previous year.
Operational performance has also improved, with an average flight completion rate of 99.8 percent and a 30.6 percent increase in on-time departure performance.
Across Italy, Wizz Air continues to expand its footprint, operating more than 250 routes to over 30 countries from 26 airports. In 2025 alone, the airline carried more than 20 million passengers in the Italian market, reinforcing its position as one of the country’s leading low-cost carriers.
