Canary Islands Brace for Storm Teresa with Landslide Risks and Flight Disruptions

The Canary Islands are preparing for severe weather as storm Teresa approaches the archipelago, bringing the risk of landslides, transport disruption and dangerous coastal conditions.

Authorities across the islands have activated precautionary measures as heavy rainfall, strong winds and high waves are forecast to impact popular tourist destinations including Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

According to Spain’s national meteorological agency Aemet, the storm could bring intense rainfall, with some areas potentially receiving precipitation levels equivalent to a full year’s average within a short period. Coastal regions are expected to face waves of up to five metres, while mountainous areas above 1,800 metres could even see snowfall.

Wind gusts in higher elevations may reach up to 90 km/h, increasing the risk of falling debris and landslides, particularly in vulnerable terrain.

Local authorities have already taken preventive action. Schools and nurseries were closed on several islands, including Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, with closures now extended across the entire archipelago.

Residents have been advised to work remotely where possible and avoid unnecessary travel as conditions are expected to deteriorate.

Meteorological experts describe the current weather pattern as an omega block, a configuration that can lead to prolonged instability in certain regions while others remain unaffected.

Transport services are expected to face increasing disruption as the storm intensifies. Flight cancellations are possible, particularly at airports exposed to strong crosswinds, while ferry services between the islands may be suspended, leaving vessels in port.

Tourists currently in the Canary Islands are being urged to monitor local updates closely and follow official safety guidance, especially in coastal and mountainous areas.

With the storm still developing over the Atlantic, authorities warn that further restrictions may be introduced if conditions worsen, as the islands move into a period of heightened weather risk.
