Late Sunday evening, a serious incident at LaGuardia Airport in New York forced authorities to shut down incoming flights after an Air Canada Express aircraft collided with an airport service vehicle during landing.
At least four people were injured in the crash. Local broadcaster NBC New York also reported that two pilots may have been killed, although this information has not yet been officially confirmed.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) quickly closed the airport to all arriving flights from across the United States and Canada. Officials indicated the closure could remain in effect until at least 6:00 p.m. local time today. LaGuardia primarily handles domestic flights and is one of the region’s key aviation hubs.
According to early reports, the aircraft struck the vehicle at a speed of around 39 km/h. The collision occurred during a thunderstorm in the area, which may have affected visibility and ground operations.
Images circulating on social media show a heavily damaged Air Canada aircraft with its nose torn off and the fuselage tilted backward. The service truck involved in the crash reportedly overturned and was completely destroyed.
There were 72 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft. Their condition remains unclear as emergency teams continue working at the scene. Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
