Wizz Air to Close Vienna Base in 2026 After Strategic Review

Wizz Air has announced it will gradually close its base in Vienna, citing rising airport costs and taxes that no longer align with the airline’s ultra–low-cost model. The decision follows a strategic review of the carrier’s operations and fleet allocation.

The closure will take place in two phases:

  • October 26, 2025 – withdrawal of two Airbus A321neo aircraft and suspension of flights to Bilbao and London Gatwick.

  • March 15, 2026 – the remaining three aircraft and all other Vienna routes will be discontinued.

From Expansion to Exit
Wizz Air opened its Vienna base in 2018, growing to a fleet of five A321neo aircraft serving 28 routes to 20 countries. Despite its strong position, the airline says the rising cost environment has made continued operations unsustainable.

“Airport costs, taxes, and ground handling charges in Vienna have risen significantly since our launch,” explained Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta. “This was a difficult but necessary decision to safeguard the long-term competitiveness of our business.”

Support for Employees and Passengers
The airline stressed its commitment to supporting affected Vienna-based staff, offering relocation to other Wizz Air bases and alternative roles where possible.

Passengers booked on affected flights beyond the suspension dates will be contacted directly and offered either a full refund in WIZZ credits or rebooking on an alternative Wizz Air flight. Those who booked through third-party providers will need to contact them directly.

Continuing Service in the Region
Despite leaving Vienna, Wizz Air emphasized that Austrian passengers will continue to be served via nearby bases, including Bratislava and Budapest, where the airline is expanding its network.

“We are grateful for the dedication of our Vienna colleagues and the loyalty of our passengers,” Peneda said. “Guided by our Customer First Compass initiative, we will keep focusing on affordable travel while placing customers and employees at the heart of our growing network.”
