Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo is set to allow female passengers to choose the gender of the person seated next to them during flights, a first in the global aviation industry. This initiative will be implemented starting August 2024 across all the airline’s flights. Currently, IndiGo operates 2,000 domestic and international flights daily.
The idea for this new policy emerged from an IndiGo survey aimed at identifying what would make travel more comfortable for women.
This new option will enable women to see the gender of fellow passengers who have already booked seats. During online check-in, seats occupied by other women will be highlighted in pink on the seating chart. Men, however, will not have access to this information and will only see available seats.
“We are committed to providing unparalleled travel experiences for all our passengers, and this new service is just one of many steps we are taking to achieve this goal,” commented the company on the initiative.
Interestingly, similar services have already been introduced in Ukraine for train bookings.
