Italian eco-activists covered the Trevi Fountain in Rome with coal. Ten activists entered the fountain holding a banner that read, “We won’t pay for campaigns supporting fossil fuel extraction considering what is happening in Emilia-Romagna,” referring to the deadly flooding in northern Italy that some experts link to the climate crisis. All the activists were arrested and charged with vandalism, according to the Rome police.
Louisa Regimenti, the councilor for personnel, municipal security, local police, and local government in the Lazio region, which includes Rome, condemned the “latest demonstrative act of eco-vandalism” that targeted “a symbol of Rome, internationally renowned.”
