During the Eastern Economic Forum 2023, Igor Gurov, the Director-General of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Rostransmodernization,” announced ambitious plans for the reconstruction of 21 transport infrastructure facilities in Russia’s Far East in the coming years.
Gurov stated, “Currently, we have 18 airports and three maritime infrastructure facilities at various stages of work. The modernization of these facilities will not only enhance connectivity between regions but also significantly increase passenger and cargo traffic in the district.”
This comprehensive initiative aims to revitalize and modernize critical transportation hubs in the Far East, improving the efficiency and capacity of the region’s transportation networks.
Some of the key projects already underway or scheduled for completion in the near future include:
- Reconstruction of Airport Infrastructure:
- In the current year, the reconstruction of airport infrastructure is slated for completion in several locations, including Yakutsk, Viluysk, Ust-Nera, Chersky, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (Elizovo), Ust-Kamchatsk, and Pevek. These upgrades will enhance the capabilities of these airports, facilitating smoother travel experiences for passengers and enabling increased cargo transport.
- Blagoveshchensk Airport:
- At Blagoveshchensk Airport, the resurfacing of the runway has been successfully completed, and preparations for the necessary documentation for commissioning are currently underway. This important step will improve the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring its readiness to serve passengers and cargo more effectively.
Looking ahead, Gurov emphasized that the modernization efforts will continue in the following year, with a focus on several airports, including Polyarny, Mirny, Sokol, Okhotsk, and Beringovsky. Furthermore, enhancements will extend to the maritime port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, contributing to the overall development and connectivity of Russia’s Far East.
These ambitious infrastructure projects underscore Russia’s commitment to fostering economic growth, regional development, and improved transportation networks in the vast and strategically significant Far East region. A retro airport is set to be created in Vologda, where a 1970s-era airport and the country’s only aviation squadron servicing Yak-40 passenger planes are still in operation.
