Hurghada Beaches Reopen, Except for Shark Attack Zone

The authorities of Egypt’s Red Sea province have announced the reopening of Hurghada beaches for swimming, with one exception. After a shark attack on a Russian citizen at Dream Beach on June 8th, the beaches were temporarily closed from June 9th to June 11th, 2023, in the El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, and Makadi Bay areas in the south. However, no further water-related incidents have been reported, prompting authorities to recommend a gradual resumption of marine activities in all northern and southern areas. The Old Sheraton Beach and Sindbad Beach, where the tragedy occurred, will remain closed.

Following the shark attack, which resulted in the tragic death of the Russian citizen born in 1999, the Red Sea province promptly ordered a two-day closure of all Hurghada beaches. A specialized team successfully captured the shark responsible for the incident, and the predator was subsequently transported to a laboratory for examination.
