Severe Storms to Batter Italy and Adriatic With Giant Hail and Tornado Risk

A significant severe weather outbreak is forecast to affect the north-central Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea region on Sunday, with meteorologists warning of destructive thunderstorms capable of producing giant hail, damaging winds, tornadoes and flash flooding.

The highest threat is expected across northern and central Italy, extending from the Ligurian Sea across the Apennines toward the Adriatic coast, where atmospheric conditions are expected to become highly favorable for severe thunderstorms.

Dangerous Atmospheric Setup

The outbreak is being driven by a large upper-level trough stretching across northern Europe, while a strong blocking high-pressure system remains over the Atlantic. At the same time, a secondary disturbance moving across Italy is interacting with warm, moisture-rich air over the Mediterranean as the subtropical ridge shifts eastward.

This combination is expected to create an exceptionally unstable atmosphere with strong wind shear—conditions that support organized, long-lived thunderstorms capable of producing multiple severe weather hazards.

Giant Hail, Damaging Winds and Flooding Threat

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern Italy during the morning before strengthening and moving toward the Adriatic Sea throughout the day.

Forecasters have issued HIGH and MODERATE severe weather risk areas across parts of Italy and the Adriatic, highlighting the potential for:

Damaging straight-line winds;
Very large to giant hail measuring between 6 and 10 centimeters, with isolated stones potentially exceeding 10 centimeters;
A few tornadoes;
Torrential rainfall leading to flash flooding.

The combination of slow-moving thunderstorms and intense rainfall could trigger localized flooding, particularly in urban areas and mountainous terrain.

Storms Also Possible Near Spain and the Balearic Islands

Forecasters are also monitoring the western Mediterranean, where isolated severe thunderstorms may develop between northeastern Spain and the Balearic Islands.

An Enhanced Risk has been issued for this region, where storms could produce:

Tornado potential: Low;
Hail up to 4 centimeters in diameter;
Wind gusts reaching 90 km/h (56 mph);
Rainfall totals of up to 75 millimeters within 24 hours.
