Spain Braces for New Heatwave With Temperatures Near 45°C

Southwestern Europe is preparing for another intense heatwave as a powerful high-pressure system draws hot, dry air from the Sahara across the Iberian Peninsula, pushing temperatures close to 45°C in parts of Spain and significantly increasing the risk of wildfires.

Spain’s national weather agency (AEMET) has warned that the third heatwave of the summer will peak between Wednesday and Thursday, with the highest temperatures expected in the country’s southern and eastern regions.

Spain Faces Peak Heat

Temperatures are forecast to exceed 40°C across large parts of southern, southeastern and central Spain, with some inland areas potentially reaching 44–45°C. Night-time temperatures are also expected to remain exceptionally high, staying above 25°C in some locations and offering little relief from the daytime heat.

The heatwave is being driven by a blocking weather pattern that is drawing very warm, dry air and Saharan dust across the Iberian Peninsula.

Portugal and France Also Affected

Neighbouring Portugal is expected to experience temperatures between 34°C and 40°C during the first part of the week before cooler Atlantic air begins to lower temperatures toward the weekend.

Southern France is also forecast to experience another spell of very hot weather, with temperatures approaching 39°C in some areas as the heat spreads north across Western Europe.

Wildfire Risk Increases

Meteorologists warn that the combination of extreme heat, very dry air and gusty winds will create a high to very high risk of wildfires across much of the Iberian Peninsula.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to avoid activities that could ignite fires, stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and follow local safety advice.

Cooler Air Expected Later This Week

Forecasts indicate that cooler Atlantic air should begin reaching western parts of the Iberian Peninsula from Friday, bringing some relief to Portugal and parts of Spain. However, southeastern Spain and the Balearic Islands are expected to remain exceptionally hot into the weekend.
